Kayode Egbetokun Removal: Tinubu Removes Inspector General Of Police From Office

The removal of Kayode Egbetokun has sparked fresh reactions across the country following reports that he has been relieved of his duties as Inspector General of Police by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Sources confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the removal of Kayode Egbetokun and directed him to begin preparations for handing over to his successor.

He is to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. Senior police officials and insiders within the Police Service Commission reportedly confirmed the removal of Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday.

“Egbetokun was at the Presidential Villa yesterday and was told to go and prepare his handover notes. I believe he has done that already, and he will be handing over to Tunji Disu,” one of the sources said.

“He is incompetent, and the scandals are just too many. He is power drunk. The president said he should leave to focus on getting treatment for himself. You know, he has kidney-related medical issues.”

Reports indicate that news of the removal of the former IG of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was met with celebration in some quarters within the police force. Some officers were said to have expressed excitement upon hearing about the development.

“Police officers jubilated on Monday when they heard the news. The First Lady Remi Tinubu wanted him to stay but the President was adamant. She fought that he should remain in office despite all the scandals,” another source disclosed.

This development comes after months of controversies surrounding his tenure. His extended stay in office beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service had generated heated debates across the country.

Civil society groups and critics argued that his continued tenure violated established police service rules, raising concerns about favoritism and disregard for institutional discipline. Thus, his removal has now brought that chapter to an end.

There were also allegations involving Bukola Yemisi Kuti, a principal staff officer to Egbetokun, who reportedly received rapid promotions under controversial circumstances. Critics claimed that her closeness to the former Inspector General influenced her career progression within the force.

Sources further alleged that Kuti was personally linked to Egbetokun, making her promotions a subject of public debate. These allegations added to the mounting pressure that eventually preceded his removal.

Another major controversy centered on claims that ₦100 million from the Anambra State security vote was allegedly traced to the account of Victor, the son of Kayode Egbetokun. The allegation triggered widespread reactions and intensified scrutiny on the police leadership.

Rather than allowing an independent investigation, it was alleged that institutional resources were deployed to pursue legal action against individuals and platforms reporting the claims. This move further fueled public suspicions and criticism before the removal.

During his time in office, Egbetokun initiated multiple lawsuits against activist Omoyele Sowore and media platforms after being described as an “illegal IGP.” The matter escalated into legal battles, with court injunctions restricting further publications concerning him and his family.

Observers argued that instead of addressing the allegations transparently, the police leadership appeared focused on legal measures against critics. The IG’s removal has now shifted attention to how the new leadership under Tunji Disu will handle similar controversies.

As the transition begins, Nigerians will be watching closely to see what reforms and changes may follow Kayode Egbetokun’s removal from office.
