President Bola Tinubu has requested for the supply of used helicopters from Germany to help in intelligence reconnaissance in the Sahel.

The phone call between Tinubu and German chancellor Friedrich Merz lasted almost ten minutes on Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said that Tinubu and Merz had decided to enhance bilateral ties and fortify cooperation in the areas of railways, power, and security.

“The Sahel corridor is bad and needs our support. Intelligence support reconnaissance is needed,” Tinubu told Merz, after both leaders expressed worry over the region.

However, Onanuga made no mention of whether Mr president’s plea was approved.

Merz and Tinubu also discussed the presidential power plan, which aims to enhance the nation’s electrical supply. According to the president, Nigeria needs help transmitting electricity.

Merz promised that Siemens would help with that, and Deutsche Bank would be happy to fund the project, the statement said.

Both countries currently have a $2.3 billion Siemens power deal which has largely stalled since 2019.

In December 2021, the federal executive council (FEC) approved $1.9 million and €62.9 million for phase one of the project, which sought to modernise, rehabilitate, and expand the national grid.

The president acknowledged the Siemens power project’s development last November, but claimed it was not up to par.
