Tinubu’s Opponents Fueling Insecurity for Political Gains — Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio has alleged that the worsening insecurity in the country is being sponsored by enemies of President Tinubu who, according to him, do not want Nigeria’s democracy to succeed.

Akpabio made the claim in Abuja on Saturday at the public presentation of three books in honour of former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, held as part of activities marking his 84th birthday. One of the books launched at the event is Abubakar’s autobiography.

After Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998, passed away, retired army general Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed leadership of the country in June 1998.

He then oversaw a transition programme within a year of taking office, which culminated in the handover of power to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999.

The transition laid the foundation for Nigeria’s current democratic era, which has continued uninterrupted for over two decades.

Following his retirement from public office, Mr Abubakar transitioned into an elder statesman and diplomat, serving in various mediation and peace-building roles across Africa, including assignments for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He currently chairs Nigeria’s National Peace Committee, which facilitates peace accords among political actors during election periods and promotes peaceful conduct before, during, and after elections.

Meanwhile, Akpabio’s comments amid Nigeria’s security situation is worsening, despite repeated assurances by President Tinubu that his administration is making progress in tackling insecurity.

BACKSTORY…
This comes shortly after the minister of Works, Dave Umahi, said that the current insecurity in Nigeria did not begin under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking with journalists, Umahi argued that insecurity tends to worsen during election periods.

He also urged Nigerians to avoid politicising the issue, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.

Attacks by armed groups, including terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and violent criminal gangs, have continued in many parts of the country since Mr. Tinubu took office in May 2023. Benue, Plateau, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno, and parts of the North-Central region have recorded especially high levels of violence.
