In a statement released by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Primate Ayodele cautioned that introducing the tax could negatively impact President Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term.

He further warned that the policy may be widely misunderstood and, if not handled carefully, could spark public backlash similar to that which followed the removal of fuel subsidy, potentially leading to unrest against the government.

“Tinubu should look into the five percent fuel tax well, they will misinterpret it and it will count as a minus for Tinubu’s second term ambition.”

He noted that opposition will use it to campaign against him and that some governors will kick against it because, in the long run, the benefit will be one-sided.

“They will use it to campaign against him. The policy will be one-sided in the long run and some governors will kick against it.”

Furthermore, he advised him to cut down on taxation policies due to the current economic situation, explaining that it’s getting too much.

“Tinubu needs to work on the taxation of a thing, it’s becoming too much, he should not let it be like subsidy removal days.”
