Following fresh violence in parts of Jos, the Plateau state capital, The University of Jos(UniJos) has ordered the immediate evacuation of students from its hostels.

The decision was issued on Wednesday in response to allegations of attacks in some metropolitan neighbourhoods, which sparked new worries about staff and student safety.

The institution stated that the decision was made after a study of the current security situation in Plateau State, where tensions have remained high in recent days, in a circular signed by Emmanuel Madugu, Deputy Registrar Information and Public Relations, on behalf of the Registrar.

The UniJos management released a strategy for a staged evacuation. On Wednesday at 3 p.m., students whose parents or guardians residing in Jos and its surrounding areas will be evacuated; students whose parents or guardians are outside the city will depart on Thursday.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang authorised the usage of vehicles during curfew hours to facilitate the evacuation, according to the management, who also stated that the Plateau State Government would support the evacuation.

“Security arrangements have been strengthened to protect university hostels and facilities during the evacuation period,” the statement said.

It further stated that the vice-chancellor had informed interested parties that the university was looking into every option to ensure the community’s safety.

This comes after gunmen slaughtered dozens of people in Angwan Rukuba, a community in Jos North Local Government Area, on Sunday night.

Eye witnesses stated the attackers stormed the Gari Ya Waye settlement between 7:30 and 8 p.m., shooting indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee. Governor Mutfwang later put the death toll at 28, describing the incident as a senseless attack on law-abiding citizens.

Many of the injured were taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
