LAGOS, NIGERIA – September 11, 2025 – The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has strongly refuted claims that a “system or technical glitch” was responsible for numerous examination malpractice notifications sent to candidates following its 2025/2026 Post-UTME screening exercise.

The university’s statement comes amid a growing controversy, with a technology CEO now threatening legal action against both UNILAG and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) over alleged failures of the online assessment platform used by both institutions.

UNILAG’s Position: Violations Were Deliberate, Not Technical Errors

In a formal statement signed by the Head of its Communication Unit, Adejoke R. Alaga-Ibraheem, the university “categorically affirms” that the malpractice notifications were not the result of a system error.

The screening exercise in question took place online from September 1 to September 4, 2025, with approximately 20,464 candidates participating.

UNILAG explained that the flagged cases were the result of “clear violations of established examination guidelines”. These infractions were reportedly detected using multiple monitoring tools, including “secure video surveillance,” which was deployed to ensure the integrity of the process.

The university also stated that while it will not release uncensored video recordings to the public due to data protection laws, it may publish a limited number of anonymized screenshots to illustrate the types of violations under review.

The Counter-Claim: Tech CEO Alleges ‘Major Bug’ and Threatens Lawsuit

The university’s firm denial is a direct response to a wave of online complaints from affected candidates, which were amplified by Alex Onyia, the CEO of Educare. On September 10, 2025, Onyia announced his intention to initiate legal action against both UNILAG and OAU over the controversial screening exercises.

His key allegations, posted on the social media platform X, include:

Both universities used the same vendor, “Web Test,” which he claimed had a “major bug with its useless AI”.

Hundreds of students were affected, with Onyia stating that he had personally received 752 reports from those impacted.

Many students were allegedly wrongly flagged for academic misconduct or received “very strange scores.” He questioned the results, asking, “How can someone who scored 360 in JAMB be scoring 20 in Post-UTME?”.

Onyia also made the tragic and serious claim that a young girl named Bridget had taken her life because of the glitch at OAU, highlighting the severe emotional toll on candidates.

Onyia has offered to have his organization conduct a free, independent audit of the systems for either university to ensure accountability.

    Understanding the Post-UTME Process

The Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) is a crucial assessment conducted by individual Nigerian universities for prospective students after the national JAMB results are released.

Its primary purpose is to further evaluate a candidate’s aptitude and suitability for admission into specific degree programs at that university. The results of the Post-UTME are combined with JAMB scores and O’Level results to determine a candidate’s final admission eligibility.
