US embassy shares explosive revelation on how Nigerian politicians lavish billions on buildings

    The US embassy in Nigeria has made a shocking revelations, disclosing a report showing the extravagance and wasteful pattern of Nigerian governors and politicians in spending public funds.

    The report titled, ‘Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses’, by The Africa Report, exposed how, despite the nation’s general economic suffering, governors still splurge billions of dollars on constructing or remodelling official buildings.

    The article claims that although President Bola Tinubu requested Nigerians to bear the financial burden brought on by his policies, the governors do not make the same sacrifice.

    “While Nigerians are tightening their belts, the same cannot be said of the ruling class.

    “Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration approved N63.4bn for the renovation of the Government House, claiming it was an embarrassment and an unbefitting facility.

    “In Gombe, one of the poorest states in Nigeria, Governor Inuwa Yahaya committed N14.9bn for a new ultra-modern residence. Another N14.23bn is being spent on the House of Assembly complex,” the report read in part.

    The US embassy responded Tuesday with an X post on its official handle that included quotes from advocacy groups for accountability and openness as well as the report’s website.

    “Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust,” the embassy wrote.
