Qatar’s aviation authority on Friday announced a partial reopening of the Gulf state’s airspace after it was closed to all air traffic at the start of a retaliatory Iranian missile and drone campaign following US-Israeli strikes.

“Qatar Civil Aviation Authority announces the partial resumption of air navigation in the State of Qatar, through designated navigational contingency routes with limited operational capacity,” the body said.

“This phase includes the operation of a limited number of flights designated for passenger evacuation, in addition to the operation of air cargo flights,” it added.

Travellers who believed they were going to one of the safest vacation spots in the region were taken aback by the conflict in the Middle East, which has overtaken the generally tranquil Gulf.

The principal airport in Qatar, Hamad International Airport, announced “the operation of a limited number of flights solely for the evacuation of stranded passengers and air cargo operations, on Saturday, March 7” in a statement.

Meanwhile, 10 Iranian drones targeted Qatar’s territory on Friday, according to the country’s defence ministry. Nine of the drones were intercepted by the military, and one struck an empty region without resulting in any casualties.
