The United States Department of State has opened its recruitment portal for Diplomatic Security Special Agents (DSSAT), calling on qualified candidates to apply for roles focused on protecting US personnel, property, and sensitive information around the world.

The recruitment exercise targets individuals ready to serve both within the United States and at diplomatic and consular missions overseas.

According to the Department, the US Diplomatic Security Special Agent recruitment covers officers responsible for managing security programs, conducting investigations, and responding to high-risk situations. These agents play a key role in maintaining safety at US facilities and supporting American interests globally.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security describes the position as vital to national and international security. “Diplomatic Security Special Agents play a vital role in protecting our people, facilities, and information at home and overseas. This is a demanding but highly rewarding career for individuals committed to public service,” the spokesperson says.

Diplomatic Security Special Agents are sworn federal law enforcement officers tasked with protecting the US Secretary of State, senior government officials, and visiting foreign dignitaries. They also investigate passport and visa fraud, counterterrorism threats, and other federal crimes linked to national security.

When deployed abroad, officers serve as regional security officers, overseeing security operations at US embassies and consulates. The Department notes that about half of an agent’s career is spent overseas, often in challenging or sensitive environments.

According to the State Department, agents “lead and manage mission security programs, assess threats, supervise security personnel, and coordinate with local and international law enforcement agencies.” The US Diplomatic Security Special Agent recruitment therefore targets individuals with strong leadership and analytical skills.

To qualify, applicants must be US citizens aged at least 20 at the time of application and must be appointed before turning 37. Candidates are also required to hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and pass strict medical, physical, and background screening.

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information access. The department explains that “the physical and mental demands of this job are significant,” adding that candidates must be prepared for life-and-death situations, extensive travel, and irregular work schedules.

Successful applicants will undergo about seven months of intensive initial training at facilities including the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia and the Diplomatic Security Training Center. The training covers firearms handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical response, criminal investigations, and protective security operations.

The department warns that failure to complete any part of the Diplomatic Security Special Agents training program may lead to separation from service. Newly recruited agents are usually posted to a domestic field office for their first two years, although some may be deployed overseas earlier based on operational needs.

Applications for the US Diplomatic Security Special Agent recruitment must be submitted online through Pearson VUE and not USAJobs. Interested candidates are required to complete an online application, provide ten years of work history, and register for the Diplomatic Security Special Agent Test.
