The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has responded to the President’s official recognition of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the head of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State by stating that traditional party structures are no longer the main political force in the state.

In response to a remark made on January 22, 2026, by presidential spokesperson Daniel Bwala, who upheld Fubara’s leadership on the basis that the Governor is a registered APC member but Wike is not, the Minister claimed that his influence goes beyond official party boundaries.

According to Wike, the “Rainbow Coalition for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” a cross-party political campaign, has brought together all of Rivers’ key political interests into a single support group.

Wike, who proclaimed himself the coalition’s leader, traditional parties in Rivers State have essentially been absorbed into this new organisation. In order to guarantee that President Tinubu receives every eligible vote in the state at the 2027 general elections, he claimed responsibility for uniting disparate political groups.

The FCT Minister made it clear that the coalition’s primary goal is to guarantee Governor Fubara’s removal, even as he pledged his machinery’s complete support for the President’s pursuit for a second term. The goal of the 2027 cycle, according to Wike, is to “oust” the governor from office while simultaneously delivering a landslide victory for the presidency.

The Governor’s institutional party platform and the Minister’s nonpartisan grassroots infrastructure will square off in 2027, according to political watchers, as Wike is trying to circumvent the formal APC hierarchy currently controlled by Fubara by switching to a “coalition” approach.
