Political tensions in Rivers State appeared to have subsided on Tuesday as a result of a “final” mediation by President Bola Tinubu between former Governor and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and his replacement, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike declared that the president’s intervention would be the final one after he inspected infrastructure projects in Abuja.

“I believe, by the grace of God, this will be the last time. I have told the Assembly to obey Mr President, which I know they will not hesitate to do. I also believe that this is the final time we will hear this kind of discourse.

“All I can tell you is that Mr President has been very kind to the people of the state. If there seems to be a problem between the legislature and the governor, as a father, he really has to intervene,” Wike stated.

During the tour of the more than 50-kilometer Port Harcourt Ring Road project, Fubara also spoke highly of Wike, who vowed to finish and deliver the project by October.

“This project is very important, considering the person who conceived it, My Oga, the honourable minister. He had a very big vision. He believed that if I achieved this project in record time, people would be happy with me.”

Recall that in an effort to end the ongoing conflict between the estranged political allies, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on Monday night.

Sources familiar with the development revealed that both men reportedly drove out of the Villa together after the encounter.

Recall that the political rift between Wike and Fubara began shortly after the governor assumed office in May 2023 and has since led to deep divisions within the state House of Assembly, repeated impeachment threats and prolonged governance challenges.

The president had previously stepped in in December 2023 and again in 2025, suspending executive powers and declaring a state of emergency before re-establishing civil rule six months later.

Wike told reporters in Abuja on Tuesday that the president had acted in his role as a father figure and a mediator, but he emphasised that this kind of intervention shouldn’t become a regular problem.

He declared that Tinubu’s involvement in the political crisis in Rivers would be his last attempt to mediate the conflict.

He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work done by the contractors.
