Ambassador Aliyu Abbas has officially emerged as the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) ahead of the 2027 general election, where he is expected to contest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other presidential hopefuls.
Aliyu Abbas secured the party’s ticket during the ADP National Convention held in Abuja in the early hours of Saturday.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, the result was announced around 5:30 a.m., sparking jubilation among party members and supporters at the venue.
Aliyu Abbas previously served as a political aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
However, the statement stressed that Abbas’ presidential ambition is independent and not linked to any former political structure or alliance.
It explained that although he once worked closely with Atiku, both men parted ways politically over two years ago following what was described as a recognised divergence in political direction.
The statement added that Aliyu Abbas’ candidacy represents a fresh movement driven by young Nigerians seeking new and independent leadership, rather than a continuation of old political blocs or interests.

Reacting to the development, the National Chairman of the ADP, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, congratulated party members, delegates, and supporters for their loyalty and commitment to the growth of the party.
He described the ADP as a credible alternative at a time when Nigeria is battling economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, poverty, social unrest, and declining trust in public institutions.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, setting the stage for a major contest against President Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
