He explained that the ideal response after the Supreme Court verdict should have been for the PDP Board of Trustees to convene all aggrieved factions and work towards reconciliation before continuing with party activities.
Mato, however, expressed doubt that the factions would be able to resolve their differences before the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the submission of candidates.
He further stressed that any faction operating under the PDP platform without additional judicial backing may eventually have to defend its legitimacy in court.
According to him, “Going by the judgment of the Supreme Court, there is currently no recognised leadership of the PDP.

“If any faction claims ownership of the party without another court judgment backing it, such a position may not stand legally.
“Anyone buying nomination forms under a particular faction is doing so at their own risk because the legality of such candidates will likely be challenged in court by rival factions or other political parties.”
He added that the ongoing internal crisis could make it difficult for the PDP to field candidates that would be legally protected ahead of future elections.
