Some members of the Taminu Turaki-led PDP faction met with former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday as part of its preparations for the 2027 general election.
According to sources, the faction had earlier announced Jonathan, in absentia, as its presidential candidate for next year’s election.
Jonathan did not attend the event at which delegates formally approved his nomination.
Although selected as the faction’s presidential candidate, Goodluck Jonathan has not yet publicly confirmed whether he intends to run in the 2027 presidential race.
Recall that on May 7, Jonathan said he would consult widely before deciding whether to run for president in 2027, following a protest at his Abuja office by supporters urging him to declare his candidacy.
Meanwhile, the former president has not yet addressed the press since then.
Further details regarding the discussions between the former president and the Turaki-led PDP faction have not yet public as of press time.
Associates Dismiss Claims of Jonathan’s 2027 Ambition
On June 4th, Close associates of former President Goodluck Jonathan previously dismissed widespread reports about a possible 2027 presidential bid, adding that there is no indication that the former leader intends to return to the ballot.
Associates of Goodluck Jonathan also dismissed reports linking him to the 2027 presidential race as false and politically motivated, adding that they would soon issue a statement reaffirming that he has no interest in contesting the election.
The associates, who spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to comment publicly, alleged that some individuals were using Jonathan’s name to advance personal political interests and create confusion within the political space.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 under the PDP, remains one of the party’s most influential figures despite largely staying away from partisan politics since leaving office.
His name has occasionally surfaced in discussions about national leadership and opposition realignment, although he has consistently maintained a statesman-like role focused on peacebuilding and democratic governance.
