26-Year-Old Lawyer Dies During Jubilations Over Ghana’s World Cup Victory

A 26-year-old Ghanaian lawyer has passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest while celebrating Ghana’s victory over Panama in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred shortly after the final whistle, turning what had been a moment of joy into one of shock and mourning for her family, friends, and colleagues.

According to sources, the deceased, identified as Sara Araba Tettey, is a newly qualified lawyer and alumna of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Reports reveal that Sara collapsed moments after celebratory scenes erupted following the world cup win.

According to local media, Ms. Tettey, who was called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year, worked at O & A Legal Consult and, furthermore, had earned a reputation among friends and colleagues as one of the country’s most promising young legal professionals.

Meanwhile, witnesses said she was watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel, a private student residence in Bomso near the KNUST campus in Kumasi, when she suddenly became unresponsive during celebrations that followed the final whistle.

Friends and other hostel patrons quickly rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel struggled to save her life.

However, despite the intensive medical intervention, she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Reacting to the unfortunate incident, friends and colleagues have described Ms Tettey, affectionately known as “Araba Tettey,” as intelligent, hardworking, compassionate and full of promise.
