The academic community in Anambra State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Professor Carter Dike Umeoduagu, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University, Umunya.
The 44-year-old Professor of Microbiology was officially inaugurated as the university’s substantive Vice-Chancellor on October 2, 2026, during a ceremony attended by family, colleagues, and associates.
However, Professor Umeoduagu reportedly took ill a day after assuming office and passed away on October 3, 2026.
The late scholar also previously served as the lawmaker representing Aguata 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly. His unexpected demise comes at a time when Tansian University has been navigating a prolonged administrative crisis.
Neither the university management nor family members have publicly disclosed the specific medical cause of Professor Umeoduagu’s sudden demise.
However, in response to the circumstances surrounding his death, Tansian University has constituted a five-member investigative committee to examine the incident.
Tansian University Reacts
Very Rev. Fr. Prof. E.S.C. Obiorah (SAN), Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Tansian University, formally announced the establishment of the five-member investigative panel during a board meeting on Monday.
The committee has been tasked with presenting its operational framework within 48 hours. The plan will outline the institution’s involvement in the burial arrangements and detail its response to the anticipated medical autopsy findings.
In his address, Obiorah described the late Vice-Chancellor as a dedicated scholar who worked tirelessly for the growth of the institution.
However, he expressed concerns regarding potential foul play or negligence surrounding the incident, emphasizing that the autopsy results would definitively establish the true cause of death.
The university declared that it will assist the family of the deceased in their choice to approve an autopsy in order to ascertain the true cause of death.
2 Weeks mourning period
The University described Professor Umeoduagu as a dynamic and accomplished scholar who worked tirelessly to elevate the institution’s academic programs and standards. The university noted that his vision extended beyond the campus, driven by a firm belief that Nigerian tertiary institutions could achieve higher academic excellence and drive national development.
In honor of the late Vice-Chancellor, the University has declared a two-week period of mourning. During this time, academic activities have been suspended and all university flags will fly at half-mast.
Management also appealed to the media and the public to refrain from unverified speculation regarding his passing and to respect the privacy of the bereaved family during this period.
