President Bola Tinubu will deliver a broadcast to the nation on October 1, 2026, as the Federal Government plans a low-key observance to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
An Inter-Ministerial Committee, headed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, has been set up to coordinate the anniversary activities. The committee’s initial meeting was attended by Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens, Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office.
Akume noted that the commemoration will provide Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the legacy, sacrifices, and contributions of the nation’s founding fathers and heroines who led the struggle for independence from colonial rule.
He added that the observance will also allow the administration to highlight its policy reforms and achievements aimed at addressing the nation’s socioeconomic challenges.
However, citing time constraints ahead of October 1, the SGF directed the committee to execute its duties efficiently and maintain a low-key focus for this year’s events.
The schedule of activities includes a world press conference on September 24, followed by a Juma’at service on September 25 and an interdenominational church service on September 27.
An Independence Day Public Lecture is scheduled for September 30, before the official activities conclude with President Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast on October 1.
Additional committee members include the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Commander of the Guards Brigade, and permanent secretaries representing key government ministries and offices.
The panel is tasked with planning and executing the approved Independence Day events, co-opting relevant individuals and organizations as needed, documenting the proceedings, and handling related assignments to ensure the successful delivery of the October 1 program.

President Bola Tinubu’s planned October 1 broadcast will be his fourth Independence Day address since assuming office in May 2023.
His previous broadcasts have largely been used to assess the state of the country and explain the policies and reforms of his administration.
In his 64th Independence Day address in 2024, Tinubu spoke extensively about the economic hardship Nigerians were facing following his government’s removal of the petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms.
A year later, during his 65th Independence Day broadcast in 2025, Tinubu again used the occasion to defend his economic reforms.
