The court has set a new date to determine Nnamdi Kanu’s bail plea.
The Federal High Court in Abuja scheduled March 19, 2024, to decide on Nnamdi Kanu’s new bail request. Kanu, the leader of IPOB, filed the application due to his poor health, as argued by his counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, in the treasonable felony case against him by the Nigerian Government.
However, the prosecuting team, led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), who replaced David Kaswe, a lawyer with the Federal Ministry of Justice, urged the court to reject the bail application. Awomolo argued that the Department of State Services (DSS) has the necessary medical facilities to attend to the IPOB leader.

The judge subsequently adjourned ruling.
The judge subsequently adjourned ruling on the bail application to March 19, 2024. “We anticipated a ruling today, but his lordship decided to defer it until March 19, 2024,” one of Kanu’s lawyers informed journalists outside the courtroom.
By then, the judge would have made a decision on whether to grant bail or not. The Court of Appeal acquitted Kanu in October 2022 and declared his rendition from Kenya to Nigeria and the terrorism charges against him illegal. However, the federal government appealed the judgment at the apex court.
In its December 15, 2023, judgment, the Supreme Court ordered the continuation of Kanu’s trial on terrorism charges, emphasizing that there is no law in the country preventing a trial based on the violation of a suspect’s rights. Kanu has been detained by the DSS since June 2021, following his repatriation from Kenya to Nigeria.
