Motorola is making a strong comeback in the budget phone market with the launch of the 2024 Moto G Power 5G and Moto G 5G. These phones address some of the pain points that plagued previous models, offering a more compelling feature set at competitive prices.

Upgraded Features and User-Friendly Design:

Additionally, they bring back the long-missed features like NFC for contactless payments and a headphone jack, catering to user preferences.

The Moto G Power 5G takes things a step further with the inclusion of a microSD card slot for expandable storage and, surprisingly for a budget phone, wireless charging capabilities.

Moto G Power 5G: More Power, More Features

The Moto G Power 5G boasts a larger 6.7-inch 1080p LCD display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. While an OLED panel might offer better contrast, the 120Hz refresh rate ensures a visually pleasing experience.

Under the hood, a mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 7020 chipset handles processing power backed by 8GB of RAM. The camera setup focuses on quality over quantity, featuring a 50-megapixel main sensor with optical image stabilization and an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera that doubles as a macro lens. Motorola ditches the gimmicks of low-resolution depth sensors and unnecessary macro cameras here.

The Moto G Power 5G packs a massive 5,000mAh battery and supports 30W wired charging (charger sold separately) and 15W wireless charging.

Moto G 5G: A Capable Budget Option

The Moto G 5G caters to those seeking a more affordable option. It sports a 6.6-inch 720p LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and utilizes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 chipset with 4GB of RAM.

The camera department features a primary 50-megapixel sensor alongside a 2-megapixel macro camera. Like the Moto G Power 5G, wired charging maxes out at 18W. Both phones offer basic water resistance but lack a full dustproof or submersible rating.

The Verdict: Promising Changes, But Performance Matters

While the new features show a positive shift in Motorola’s budget offerings, the overall user experience will depend on software optimization. Bloatware was a major concern in previous models.

The launch schedule kicks off with the Moto G Power 5G available at Cricket Wireless starting March 22nd, followed by wider carrier availability and an unlocked version on March 29th.
