Tobi Amusan Eyes Historic Four-Medal Haul at African Games

Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, the current world record holder in the 100m hurdles, has a chance to etch her name in history at the ongoing African Games in Ghana.

Ambitious Multi-Event Schedule:

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has listed Amusan for an ambitious four events:

  • 100m
  • 200m
  • 4x100m relay
  • 100m hurdles (her signature event)

While this heavy schedule might raise concerns about burnout before the Paris Olympics, Amusan’s coach likely has a strategic plan in mind, potentially using these events as part of her Olympic training.

High Medal Potential:

Despite never competing in the 100m and 200m at a senior international level, Amusan has a strong chance to medal in all four events.

  • 100m: Amusan clocked a personal best of 11.10s in the 100m last year but didn’t compete in the event further. If she replicates or improves upon this time, a podium finish or even gold is a possibility. A win would make her Nigeria’s first medalist in the event since 2011.

  • 200m: Amusan’s last 200m race was in 2022, where she set a personal best of 22.66s. Given her overall improvement, she could potentially secure a podium finish for Nigeria, possibly even the gold, for the first time since 2011.

  • 100m hurdles: Amusan is the clear favorite in her signature event, aiming to extend Nigeria’s unbeaten streak in the Games’ 100m hurdles.

  • 4x100m relay: Nigeria’s 4x100m team, with Amusan included, is a strong contender to win their fourth consecutive title.

Record-Breaking Potential:

If Amusan successfully competes in all four events and maintains her indoor season form, she has the potential to break several records:

  • Become the second Nigerian woman (after Vivian Chukwuemeka) to win three consecutive titles in the same event (100m hurdles).
  • Break her own African Games record of 12.68s in the 100m hurdles.
  • Become the first Nigerian athlete to win four medals at the Games.
  • Become the first athlete ever to win four medals or titles at the Games.
  • Help Nigeria win four consecutive titles in the 4x100m relay.
  • Revive Nigeria’s dominance in women’s sprints at the African Games.

Tobi Amusan’s performance in Ghana will be closely watched as she aims for an unprecedented achievement in African Games history.
