Nigeria’s future uncertain without a new constitution, warn Anyaoku, Adebanjo, Nwachukwu, Attah, and Sanwo-Olu.

In Lagos, prominent figures convened to discuss the urgent need for a new constitution to address Nigeria’s security and economic challenges and steer the country towards growth.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Senator Ike Nwachukwu, Obong Victor Attah, and Chief Mike Ozekhome were among those present.

They emphasized the necessity of replacing the 1999 constitution with one crafted by the people. Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged to work towards true federalism and criticized the inconsistency of some leaders. Senator Tambuwal and Senator Daniel promised to raise the issue in the National Assembly.

Rotimi Amaechi advocated for action, highlighting the repeated discussions without tangible change. Aregbesola called for a return to the parliamentary system of government.

Attah emphasized the need for a completely new constitution, noting the flaws of centralizing power. They echoed Professor Ben Nwabueze’s regret over the excessive centralization of power, which has led to disunity rather than unity.
