Nigerian Man Arrested in India Over Deadly S3xtortion Scam
In India, a 31-year-old Nigerian citizen, Chijioke John Okoye, has reportedly been arrested in connection with blackmailing and extorting a female doctor whose alleged suicide he is charged with assisting.
Allegedly, the accused had obtained some obscene photographs of the woman and used them to extort lakhs of rupees from her.

The woman was believed to have taken her life as the accused kept demanding money and threatening to release explicit content online. Okoye was caught in New Delhi on Friday, the 21st of March 2025, and was produced before the court on Sunday, the 23rd of March, in Cuttack, Odisha.
According to police, up until 2020, Okoye had been living in Delhi.
While addressing the media, Sunday, Cuttack Commissioner of Police DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo mentioned that the suicide note left by the victim, aged thirty-seven, stated that she took the extreme step on March 1, 2025, after constant blackmail and threats from an unknown person(s) asking her to pay money over the WhatsApp application.

Investigations began at the request of the victim’s family through the Cuttack Urban Police District’s Cyber Cell.

The police found out that the WhatsApp numbers used to contact the victim were international ones and contacted the telecom service provider for their records.
Consequently, the IP address was traced to New Delhi, whereupon a special police team visited that location, leading to an arrest of the accused from Palam Colony.
As narrated by the DCP, Okoye’s modus operandi was to survey several online Facebook accounts of professionals in domains like medicine and thereafter create fake profiles to impersonate the victims.
With the fake profiles, Okoye sent friend requests from profiles in related fields. He befriended them, procuring their mobile phone and WhatsApp numbers under the pretext of being in a relationship with them.

“Then, the accused went ahead blackmailing the victims using their private and intimate photographs/videos he collected by way of sharing fake photographs/videos of the persons he impersonated,” Khilari said.
Similar methods were used by Okoye to contact the woman from Cuttack.
The accused allegedly extorted money from the woman using intimate photographs and videos of her.
“The victim got scared and found no other way to confront the demands by the accused for more money, threatening to make her private pictures and videos viral, and ended her life,” police stated, revealing that around 3,000 fake profiles run by the accused have so far been traced.

“A laptop, five mobile phones, and eight SIM cards from different countries were recovered from him. Though he is from Nigeria, a passport of ‘REPUBLIQUE DE COTE D’IVORIE’, issued in the name of Okoye was found in his possession and is under verification. He will be taken on remand further to ascertain whether he operates alone or as a part of a larger cybercrime syndicate,” Khilari stated.
