AI Chatbots Go Mainstream: Big Tech Makes the Future of Language Accessible
Tech giants like Microsoft (Copilot), Google (Gemini), and OpenAI (ChatGPT-4) are bringing once-secretive AI chatbot technology to the everyday user.
But how do these large language models (LLMs) actually work? OpenAI’s GPT-3 offered a simplified explanation: AI uses a series of “autocomplete” programs to learn language patterns. These programs analyze vast amounts of text data to statistically predict the most likely next word in a sequence.
However, these AI tools are essentially fancy autocomplete systems. They don’t have a built-in database of facts, just the ability to string together seemingly plausible text. This can lead to the concerning issue of AI confidently presenting false information as truth, simply because it sounds believable.
The world of AI is constantly evolving, with new players and name changes emerging rapidly (remember Bing’s Bard experiment last year?).
