Breaking news: A Binance executive has fled custody in Nigeria.

Nadeem Anjarwalla, a Binance executive detained in Nigeria over tax evasion allegations, reportedly escaped custody on March 22, 2024. According to a Premium Times report, the 38-year-old escaped from an Abuja guest house where he and his colleague were held. Guards took him to a nearby mosque for prayers during Ramadan, where he escaped. Anjarwalla, a British and Kenyan citizen, is said to have left Abuja on a Middle East airliner, despite Nigerian authorities holding his British passport.

Authorities are investigating his escape and his intended destination to bring him back into custody. An Immigration official stated that Anjarwalla fled using a Kenyan passport, but it’s unclear how he obtained it without other travel documents.

Anjarwalla, Binance’s Africa regional manager, and Tigran Gambaryan, a US citizen overseeing financial crime compliance, were detained upon arrival in Nigeria on February 26, 2024. The Nigerian government filed criminal charges against them for tax-related offenses and failure to comply with court orders.
