A gas explosion at a family’s home in Warri, Delta State, has unfortunately claimed the lives of three people.
As the family was getting ready for their daughter’s birthday celebration, the tragedy happened on May 30, 2025, according to information obtained by news correspondents.

According to sources, the father was installing a burner on a small gas cylinder while another cooker adjacent was already in use. It was gathered that gas leakage from the smaller cylinder reportedly ignited a fire from the other flame, triggering a devastating gas explosion.
The father passed after the explosion due to his injuries. The woman died after being taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) after suffering severe burns.

Additionally, their daughter, who had just received a visa and was scheduled to fly overseas, was severely burned. On June 14, 2025, she passed away in the same hospital.
John Perede Akpoyibo, an engineer who reported the occurrence, blamed the gas explosion on the use of several gas cylinders in a small area and the lack of safety gear like fire extinguishers and gas leak detectors.
He advised households to make sure there is enough ventilation, put out any fires when handling gas and refrain from utilising several cylinders in enclosed areas. In order to prevent such catastrophes in the future, Akpoyibo also advocated for greater community knowledge on petrol safety.
