Rivers: Wike-Fubara supporters clash over peace deal terms
Supporters of Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, have expressed differing opinions over his reconciliation with Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Some applauded the development, while others described the peace, negotiated by President Bola Tinubu, as brittle and the governor’s surrender.

Fubara and Wike called a truce after President mediated a reconciliation between both parties on Thursday night.

Recall that Tinubu hosted Wike, Fubara, and Martin Amaewhule, the suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, together with a few other MPs, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja for the private meeting.

Wike assured reporters during the meeting at the Presidential Villa that the political divide between him and Fubara had been healed, with both sides pledging to put an end to the fighting and cooperate.

Following this Dr Leloonu Nwibubasa, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment stated that what transpired in Abuja was a surrender and not a reconciliation.

The former commissioner said that there was no reconciliation because the governor was not accompanied by his followers.

He further described the truce as a “vicious development,” adding that Wike had managed to intimidate the governor into surrendering.

Similarly, in a statement released on Friday, the Rivers Emancipation Movement claimed that the reconciliation was not beneficial to the state’s citizens.

According to the group, Any resolution that benefited “a few selfish individuals and undermined the collective interest of Rivers people” would not stand. The National President of the group, Zoe Tamunotonye, stated that Fubara betrayed people of the state who stood by him by not carrying them along in the process.

Additionally, Deji Adeyanju, a political analyst and human rights advocate, also called the peace agreement “fragile.”

He cautioned that the reunion should be viewed as a “trap” rather than a success.

“Governor Fubara must prepare his mind that this reconciliation is a trap, and not a truce. Wike will not only undermine him now but will breach the agreement on purpose,” he said.

However, according to Jerry Omatsogunwa, Fubara’s Special Adviser on Electronic Media, the reconciliation would bring about peace and progress in the state.

While advising that the governor’s office must be honoured, he also emphasised the necessity for all parties to respect the leaders’ decision.
