The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide body has reiterated its call for the release of the proscribed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from detention after four years.

The call was issued in a statement released in Enugu on Friday by Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

This is coming after Justice E.C. Mwita of the High Court in Nairobi, Kenya declared the abduction, detention, and subsequent rendition to Nigeria of the Biafra Nation agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as illegal and unlawful.

The judge held that the rendition carried out in June 2021 was a gross violation of the fundamental rights of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Following this and in the spirit of equity, fairness, and inclusive justice, Dr. Chukwu of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide group urged President Bola Tinubu to use his constitutional authority and diplomatic channels to free him.

He  cited that it has been four years of Kanu’s unlawful arrest and detention in Kenya, prior to his extradition to Nigeria.

“The question of Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention poses a moral burden on the corporate integrity of the Nigerian judicial system.

“Since his process of extradition from Kenya is unlawful and the basis for his arraignment questionable, one wonders about the rationale for detaining Kanu for four years without justice,” he said.
