Tensions rise as angry youths burn Emir’s palace, NDLEA office in Kwara state

Angry youths in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, have set NDLEA office ablaze, causing wreckage to numerous vehicles and properties in protest of the increase in kidnappings and band assaults.

The incident happened on the morning of June 30, 2025, a Monday.

The demonstration was allegedly aimed at Mohammed Kawu Kudu, the Emir of Lafiagi, who is currently supposedly out of town.

In viral photos circulating social media, a building reportedly believed to be the NDLEA office was set ablaze, with many vehicles around of the building destroyed.

The recent kidnappings of some persons by bandits or kidnappers has caused anxiety and frustration among the locals, which is the root cause of the disturbance.

According to reports, Alhaji Chemical, a well-known agrochemical dealer, was abducted by bandits on Sunday.

It was discovered that the bandits first broke into the neighbourhood before storming the victim’s home at Taiwo Road in Lafiagi in Kwara and fired to incite fear before removing him.

Similarly, Kokodo village in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State was raided by suspected bandits on Monday morning, resulting in the reported kidnapping of at least two inhabitants.

Sources claim that the event happened at around 12 a.m. on Monday, just two hours after bandits abducted a POS operator in Lafiagi town, which is located in the same local government region.

According to the villagers, two Hausa males were abducted when the highly armed bandits broke into the village, which is a border settlement between the LGAs of Patigi and Edu.

However, the third victim, a teenage girl, managed to escape from the kidnappers. it was also reported that a resident who attempted to raise the alarm during the invasion was shot, sources confirmed.

Many residents of the town now say they have little faith in the Emir’s ability to lead, particularly given his absence at such a crucial moment.

According to information obtained, the demonstrators claimed that the traditional authority’s silence and inaction had increased youth mistrust and dissatisfaction, leading them to demand answers and prompt action regarding their community’s safety and security.

As of the time this report was filed, the Kwara state police command had not yet verified the incidence.
