Nigerian Politician Killed by Gunmen in Katsina
Shooting Incident
On Wednesday, April 24th, according to a report by the Guardian newspaper on Friday, April 26th, Alhaji Basa, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was shot and killed by gunmen in Katsina state, Nigeria.
Details of the Attack
The incident occurred around 3:30 pm on the road leading to Danmusa. Basa was reportedly returning from a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the APC in Danmusa when he was attacked. He had offered a ride to a passenger traveling to Mai Dabino, and both were shot during the attack.
Nigeria’s Security Challenges
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu. The military, stretched thin by fighting Boko Haram in the northeast, struggles to contain bandit activity. These bandit groups, often composed of Fulani ethnicities and mercenaries, are known for kidnapping for ransom.
Recent Clashes
This attack follows a separate incident, where bandits killed Sanusi Hassan, the Katsina Community Watch Corps commander for Kankara LGA, along with four vigilantes and two civilians. This clash reportedly resulted in over 20 casualties on the bandits’ side.
