Breaking News: Nigerian workers receive renewed optimism as Tinubu’s administration sets a date to commence payment of the new minimum wage.

The Federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has instilled fresh optimism in Nigerian workers by announcing that the new minimum wage will be implemented starting today, May 1, 2024, despite ongoing negotiations within the tripartite committee.

Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, conveyed this assurance to Nigerian workers during the May Day celebration in Abuja. She underscored that while negotiations are still ongoing, efforts are being made to expedite the process and ensure timely implementation of the new minimum wage.

Expressing regret over the delay in finalizing the new national minimum wage, Onyejeocha reassured workers that comprehensive consultations are underway to facilitate the prompt formulation of the necessary document.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have consistently urged the Tinubu administration to expedite the upward review of wage awards. In recent times, Organised Labour has advocated for a new minimum wage of N615,000 to address the economic realities and high cost of living in Nigeria.

Furthermore, President Tinubu, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, commended the contributions of Nigerian workers to the country’s growth during the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja. He affirmed the government’s readiness to receive recommendations from the committee on the new national minimum wage, while assuring that the reform agenda of the administration is aimed at advancing Nigeria’s progress.
