There has been ongoing controversy surrounding the resignation of Aondona Dajoh, the speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly.

The ruling All progressives Congress (APC) in the state has been torn between two factions: Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

Both have engaged in a “cold war” over control of the party’s structure.

According to reports, former Speaker Dajoh is the victim of the most recent conflict.

According to rumours that circulated before to last Sunday’s drama, Dajoh was mingling with members of Akume’s team, which upset the governor tremendously. The steps to impeach the speaker started once he lost faith in him. At a plenary, Dajoh swiftly declared the suspension of the four accused members who were allegedly pushing for his removal after learning of the plan to remove him.

Dajoh utilised his power to suspend four members who were allegedly plotting his impeachment until last Friday, before his sudden resignation.

However, in a shocking twist of event, Dajoh resigned just 48 hours after announcing the suspension of his colleagues, including James Umoru of Apa State Constituency, Terna Shimawua of Kian State Constituency, Cyril Ekong of Obi State Constituency, and Alfred Berger, Chairman of the House Committee on Information.

He further claimed that it was a move born out of willingness and not coercion.

Furthermore, the Benue House of Assembly maintained yesterday that Fr. Alia had no effect over Dajoh’s resignation, which was a personal choice.

In his handwritten resignation letter, the ex- Benue speaker said his choice was made in “good faith and in the best interest of the state.”

According to sources privy to the development, the governor, who was worried that Dajoh was starting to exercise vast authority, embraced the notion and backed Emberga’s candidature as the next speaker. The House nominated and elected him as their speaker during the emergency plenary, immediately lifting the suspension on him and three other members.

There has been mixed responses to the development in a variety of ways. Some have praised the Benue state governor for taking what they call a “bold step,” while others have criticised him for pushing the speaker to leave.
