A group of prominent Nigerians, including activists and members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have urged the government to avoid military agreements with the United States and France. Their concern? The potential relocation of foreign military bases to Nigeria.
These leaders, including figures like Abubakar Siddique Mohammed (Centre for Democratic Development) and Jibrin Ibrahim (Centre for Democracy and Development), sent a letter to President Tinubu and the National Assembly outlining their reasons for opposing such a move.
The letter highlights lobbying efforts by the US and France to secure new defense pacts with Nigeria and neighboring countries. These pacts would allow them to redeploy troops recently expelled from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, with a focus on strategically located nations in the Gulf of Guinea.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s strategic importance, the leaders warn of potential risks to national defense and security if these agreements are signed. They point to the recent expulsions of US and French forces from Niger as evidence that such deployments may not yield the desired security benefits and could be driven by other motives.
The message is clear: Nigeria’s leaders need to tread carefully before entering into any defense agreements that could compromise the nation’s sovereignty and security.
