Tinubu’s govt constructing roads to last 100 years- Umahi boasts
Dave Umahi, minister of works, insists that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is not merely constructing roads but building durable infrastructure designed to last for at least 100 years.

Umahi made his remarks on Wednesday following an inspection of the Lagos–Sagamu–Ijebu–Ode–Benin motorway’s ongoing restoration.

According to the minister, using concrete pavement technology instead of asphalt in road construction will ensure longevity and provide better quality.

“Show me any asphalt road in this country that has lasted 50 years. Even the Lagos-Ibadan expressway is already failing in some portions,” he said.

“But the concrete road built in my state in the 1950s is still standing. We are not just constructing roads; we are building roads that will last over 100 years.”

The minister described the reconstruction project as a model for the nation’s new federal road infrastructure standard and expressed satisfaction with the speed and calibre of work on it.

According to him, the contractor is “working day and night” to fulfil the December deadline and has finished nearly 8.1 km of one carriageway on the Sagamu-bound route.

“This project is an extension of the presidential infrastructure development fund (PIDF) initiative under President Tinubu’s administration,” Umahi said.

He directed the federal controller of works in Ogun to ensure that every completed five-kilometre stretch is opened to traffic after 21 days and properly maintained to ease movement and reduce travel stress.
Speaking about the highway’s aesthetics and safety features, the minister stated that the highway development and management initiative (HDMI) would include solar-powered lamps, CCTV surveillance, rest spaces, clinics, security posts, restaurants, and other roadside amenities.
The minister’s claims comes only a few days after he was brutally criticised over failure to provide clear information on the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway cost per kilometer on national television.
