A two-story structure at No. 54, Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, next to UBA Bank in Oyingbo, Lagos, collapsed in the early hours of Monday, trapping numerous residents beneath the debris.

Reports state that the incident happened just after midnight.

Rescue operation in progress

Firefighters from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station arrived at the scene minutes later, at 12:29 a.m., to start search and rescue efforts after the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, or LSFRS, got a distress call at 12:20 a.m.

The director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the development, stating that 15 people—seven adult males, four adult females, and four children—had been saved alive thus far, all with varied degrees of injuries.

She said that the patients had been sent to the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos Island, and the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Meta for immediate medical care.

According to preliminary investigations, the unfortunate building was still inhabited at the time of the collapse despite having previously been designated as disturbed.

Adeseye reported that rescue operations were still in progress, with emergency personnel searching through the rubble for any victims who could still be trapped.
