Justice Ayo Salami, a former president of the Court of Appeal, has clarified why former president Goodluck Jonathan is not eligible to run for president in 2027.
According to Salami, the former president cannot run for office again in 2027 due to the constitution.

He pointed out that since the constitution expressly prohibits anyone from serving as President for longer than eight years, Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to hold Nigeria’s highest political position would be illegal.
The former president of the Appeal Court clarified in an editorial piece that Jonathan served out the term of the late former president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning his own election, rendering any subsequent attempts illegal.

He emphasised that the victory would not stand if Goodluck Jonathan challenged and prevailed. He claimed that such a mandate would be overturned by the courts.

Salami said: “It is painstakingly and dispassionately demonstrated abundantly to all and sundry that ambition of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to contest for the office of the president for the second term in the 2027 general election is effectively and undoubtedly shot down…”
