Sexual Harassment Bill: Nigerian Senate Approves 14-Year Jail Term for Lecturers
The Nigerian Ministry of Finance has issued an formal circular inviting 50 senators to a two-day “High-Level Policy Training on American Foreign Policy Under the Donald Trump’s Administration.”

According to sources, the invitation, which was sent to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and signed by Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister of State for Finance, caused a stir right away.

One of the critics said, “These people aren’t serious. Instead of dealing with the insecurity issues, they are training senators…on how to negotiate with America.”

The circular, dated November 17, 2025, and marked Ref: FMF/HMS/CORRS/01/VOL.1/112, confirms that “all necessary arrangements have been concluded” for the training scheduled for Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd November 2025 at the National Assembly Complex.

According to the ministry, the programme is expected to help senators and lawmakers navigate “American Foreign Policy Under the Trump Administration: New Realities for African Negotiators.”

It goes on to say that the training aims to improve the senators knowledge of “the structures, processes, and operational culture of the American legislative system” and to increase lawmakers’ interaction with members of the U.S. Congress.

The Senate President is urged to confirm attendance and submit nominations so that the Secretariat can “conclude the necessary logistics arrangements,” according to the ministry, which stated that it had planned the program to support fifty senators and members of the House of Representatives.

This comes at a time when terrorist assaults in Nigerian schools and places of worship are becoming more frequent.

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, further asserted that recent remarks made by US President Donald Trump encouraged violent networks throughout Nigeria and provided extremist organisations with a new international narrative to support attacks on vulnerable populations.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Akume connected what he called the “inadvertent” effect of Trump’s remarks on Nigeria’s security environment to the increase in propaganda by terror cells, bandit organisations, and extremist actors.

His comments come after Trump declared on October 31 that Nigeria was a “country of particular concern” due to claimed Christian genocide. He also threatened to send American soldiers to Nigeria if the deaths persisted.

Additionally, Trump disclosed that he had given the Department of War instructions to get ready for “possible action” in the event that the violence continued. The U.S. President equally vowed to suspend Washington’s support if the Tinubu administration failed to halt the claimed persecution.

According to Akume, Trump’s stance has turned into a rallying cry for organisations looking for legitimacy, enabling violent actors to take advantage of outside rhetoric to escalate internal disputes.

The statement partly read, “Recent pronouncements from the United States have inadvertently emboldened opportunistic violent groups seeking to exploit international narratives and make bold statements by attacking soft targets.

“Before these statements, insurgency structures had been significantly degraded and reduced to isolated banditry. This resurgence underscores the vital need for collaboration—not public labeling—between Nigeria and the United States.”

Akume claimed the government’s stance that Nigeria does not need foreign troops, pointing out that the Nigerian Armed Forces had degraded ISWAP and Boko Haram institutions and recaptured lands.

Instead, he said, the nation requires focused assistance from allies, particularly in the areas of technology, equipment, and intelligence.
