All pupils abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Private Primary and Secondary School in the Papiri community of Agwara Local Government Area, Niger State, have regained their freedom.

The release of the last group of 115 St. Mary’s students on Sunday brought the total number of freed children to about 265, effectively ending a harrowing ordeal that lasted over a month.
The St Mary’s students were kidnapped in the early hours of November 21, 2025, when armed assailants stormed the boarding school and abducted 303 students along with 12 teachers, in what ranked among the largest mass kidnappings recorded in Nigeria in recent times.

In the aftermath of the attack, reports indicate that 50 students managed to escape on their own shortly after the incident, while another 100 were freed on December 8 following sustained security operations.
The release of the remaining 115 St Mary’s students has brought immense relief to their families and is being celebrated by security agencies as a significant breakthrough in the rescue efforts.
