FG-ASUU New Agreement Brings 40 Percent Salary Increase And University Autonomy

The Federal Government has reached a fresh understanding with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, marking what is now being described as the FG-ASUU new agreement. The development is expected to resolve many of the lingering issues around salaries, funding, and university autonomy that have strained the public university system in recent years.

Details of the FG-ASUU new agreement were made public on Wednesday, January 14, by the Presidency and shared widely across social media platforms. Under the deal, academic staff in federal universities will enjoy a 40 percent salary increase, a move that has been welcomed by many lecturers across the country.

The FG-ASUU new agreement also improves pension benefits for professors, as retirees will now receive pensions equivalent to their annual salary when they attain the age of 70. This measure is aimed at providing better financial security for senior academics who have spent decades serving the nation’s education sector.

In addition, the FG-ASUU new agreement introduces a restructured funding model for universities with dedicated allocations for research, libraries, laboratories, equipment, and staff development. A proposed National Research Council is also expected to fund research initiatives with at least one percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.

The agreement further guarantees greater university autonomy and academic freedom across federal institutions. Under the FG ASUU new agreement, positions such as deans and provosts will now be filled through elections, and only professors will be eligible to occupy these offices.

The Presidency also assured that no academic staff will be victimized for their involvement in the negotiation process that led to the FG-ASUU new agreement. The deal is scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026, and will be reviewed after three years to assess its impact on the university system.
