Emefiele trial EFCC pressure allegations
The ongoing legal battle involving the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, took a very dramatic turn this week at the Special Offences Court in Ikeja. For those of us following the case, we know it has been a long road filled with various legal technicalities and shocking revelations.
However, the latest update from the courtroom feels more like a script from a high stakes movie than a regular judicial proceeding. A defence witness has come forward with some very serious allegations, claiming that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission attempted to coerce a co-defendant into testifying against their former boss.
Drama in court as witness reveals alleged EFCC pressure
During the proceedings on Thursday, Nnamdi Offial, a lawyer representing the second defendant, Henry Omoile, stood before Justice Rahman Oshodi to share what he called the “real story” behind the interrogation sessions.
The official was testifying in a trial within a trial, which is essentially a special hearing to determine if the statements made to the police or the EFCC were given voluntarily. He did not hold back at all. According to him, the EFCC investigators were not just looking for facts; they were actively pushing for a specific narrative that would pin the former CBN oga to the wall. This kind of allegation always causes a stir because it touches on the very foundation of how justice is served in our country.
The inside story of the failed deal to nail Emefiele
The details of the alleged “deal” are quite interesting. Offial claimed that the head of the interrogation team practically promised Omoile a get out of jail free card. They reportedly told him that if he could just provide enough “incriminating evidence” to indict Emefiele, he would be granted bail and might even escape being prosecuted entirely.
It sounds like a classic case of trying to get the small fish to swallow the big fish. But the witness says Omoile did not play along. He alleged that when Omoile gave answers that did not fit the story the investigators wanted to hear, they simply refused to let him write those answers down. It was a tug of war between the truth and a pre written script, leading to what Offial described as a restrictive and unfair interrogation process.
A legal battle over voluntary statements and forced answers
The tension in the room reached a boiling point when Offial described a particular “showdown” at the EFCC office. He narrated how he was once kicked out of the premises by an officer simply because he tried to stop them from questioning his client without him being present. This kind of “wahala” shows just how intense the investigation has been.
However, the EFCC lead prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, was quick to push back during cross examination. He got the witness to admit that Omoile actually signed a caution form and that no physical harassment happened while the lawyer was in the room. This back and forth is exactly why the judge has to be very careful in deciding which version of the story to believe.
Looking ahead as the court weighs the weight of these claims
As it stands, the court has adjourned the matter until January 16, 2026, to continue this specific inquiry. The big question remains: were these statements given voluntarily or were they the result of extreme pressure? If the court finds that the EFCC truly overstepped its bounds, it could change the entire direction of this 4.5 billion dollar fraud trial.
