Ibrahim Lamorde, ex-EFCC chairman, is dead.

Ibrahim Lamorde, the former chairman of Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away at the age of 61. Mr. Lamorde died in Egypt, where he had traveled for medical treatment, according to a close associate.

Born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State, Lamorde joined the Nigerian Police in 1986 and retired as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021. He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1984.

Lamorde’s notable tenure at the EFCC began when he was appointed the pioneer Director of Operations upon the commission’s creation in 2003. He served as Acting Chairman in 2008 before Farida Waziri’s appointment. On November 3, 2011, following Waziri’s removal by President Goodluck Jonathan, Lamorde was appointed Acting Chairman and was confirmed as the third substantive Chairman by the Senate on February 15, 2012. He held the position until November 9, 2015, when President Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu.
