FG Challenges 36 Governors in Supreme Court for LG Autonomy.

The Federal Government (FG) has filed a lawsuit against the governors of Nigeria’s 36 states at the Supreme Court, seeking full autonomy for local government areas (LGAs). The suit, marked SC/CV/343/2024 and filed by Attorney General Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, challenges the governors’ alleged misconduct in LGA administration.

The FG requests the court to:

  1. Prohibit governors from dissolving elected LGA leaders unilaterally.
  2. Ensure LGA funds are directly distributed from the federation account.
  3. Stop governors from forming caretaker committees for LGAs.
  4. Restrict governors from accessing LGA funds without a democratically elected system in place.

The FG argues that the Constitution mandates a democratically elected LGA system and that governors’ actions undermine constitutional provisions. The FG seeks a Supreme Court declaration enforcing these constitutional requirements on state governors and legislatures.
