Covenant University and MiGO Mobile Forge Strategic Tech Partnership to Boost Innovation and Skills Development

Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, has taken a confident step forward in the race to deepen technology adoption across Nigerian campuses by partnering with global tech brand MiGO Mobile. The partnership was formally launched with the unveiling of a new tech hub at the university aimed at strengthening student research, innovation and practical skills development.

At a time when the global economy is rapidly shifting towards digitisation and artificial intelligence, institutions of higher learning are under pressure to equip graduates with relevant competencies. The launch of the Care and Research Development Centre at Covenant University reflects this urgency and offers a clear model of how academia and industry can collaborate to build future‑ready graduates.

A Vision for Student Empowerment Through Research and Technology

The core aim of the partnership is to create an environment where research and practical application meet. The Centre will serve as a hub for mentoring students, supporting hands‑on experimentation and developing scalable tech solutions. Leaders from both the university and MiGO Mobile emphasised that this is more than just a corporate sponsorship or product display space; it is a learning ecosystem designed to nurture innovation culture on campus.

During the launch, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MiGO Mobile, Dr George Evans, spoke passionately about the company’s vision. According to him, the collaboration represents a deliberate investment in human capital. He said meaningful impact begins with vision, focus and the courage to act. “For me, it is about building a legacy,” he noted, emphasising that equipping young Nigerians with cutting‑edge technology skills will contribute to national development and economic growth.

Evans also highlighted plans to expand MiGO’s reach within Nigeria by partnering with telecom giant MTN to pilot the availability of MiGO smartphones at selected outlets. The plan is to test supply across 16 MTN locations, with potential for expansion based on performance.

The Leadership Praises The Covenant University and MiGO Mobile Forge Strategic Collaboration

The Vice Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Timothy Anake, described the moment as one of pure joy and fulfilment. In his remarks, he likened the unveiling of the Centre to the pride of a new birth, echoing the excitement and hope that such collaborations can stir within academic communities. The VC observed that when universities and industry align around shared goals, the impact ripples beyond campus walls into wider society.

Professor Anake stressed that this partnership will open doors for students to experience technology transfer first‑hand, participate in real research projects and, importantly, access internships or even potential employment opportunities. The Centre is expected to host programmes that bring students closer to the realities of product development, engineering design and innovation management.

Beyond academic enhancement, the initiative will support scholarship awards and student ambassador roles. During the launch event, two students received significant scholarship awards, with one covering full tuition from the 100 to 500 level and another receiving a substantial bursary. These awards are designed to motivate students and signal that merit and creative potential are recognised and rewarded.

What the Partnership Means for Nigeria’s Tech Future

The Covenant University–MiGO Mobile collaboration stands as one of the most visible examples of how private sector interest in technology can be channelled into educational transformation. In a broader Nigerian context, there has been a growing push for universities to become engines of innovation, bridging the gap between academic research and market needs.

Across the country, other universities have also been exploring collaborations with private sector partners to deepen technology skills and research capacity. Initiatives include Memoranda of Understanding between universities and tech agencies to build innovation hubs, and skills‑based programmes that bring real‑world exposure to students.

Nigeria’s higher education sector has struggled with challenges such as limited funding for research and the need to better align curricula with the demands of a digital economy. By creating structures that bring private technology firms into active roles on campus, stakeholders hope to narrow the divide between academic learning and industry expectations.

For Covenant University, the launch of the Care and Research Development Centre is an affirmation of the institution’s strategic direction. From this platform, students will be encouraged to think beyond traditional classroom learning towards innovation that can compete locally and internationally.

Perhaps the most significant outcome from such industry‑academia partnerships will be the cultivation of a generation of young Nigerians who are not simply consumers of technology, but creators of solutions adapted to African realities.
