The dispute between Mr Akpabio and Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan dates back to February 2025.

The Kogi Central senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had openly accused Mr. Akpabio’s Senate leadership of marginalisation and unjust treatment, something the Senate president has often refuted. Following which Senator Natasha was suspended by the Senate for six months.

She had also accused Mr Akpabio of sexual harassment, which he also denied.

Later, the arguments escalated into open discussions in the media and on social media. The political tension between the two politicians increased as a result.

According to the police report, on April 28, 2025, Senator Natasha. Akpoti-Uduaghan provided a cautionary statement after being invited by investigators, during which she denied making the accusation. Ina Okopi Agu, a crucial witness who reportedly gave the senator Ms. Duru’s phone number, was also invited and voluntarily gave a testimony verifying the events leading up to the conversation.

A forensic voice analysis of the audio tape proved that the voice in the conversation was human, according to the police report. According to the article, detectives were also sent to Akwa Ibom State to examine the post-mortem report, trial transcripts, and interviews with Ms. Umoren’s family members in connection with her murder.

It further stated that Ms. Umoren’s family members attested in their declarations that none of her organs had been removed. According to the police, certified true copies of Uduak Frank Akpan’s trial records were also reviewed. Akpan was found guilty and given the death penalty for the 2021 murder of Ms. Umoren.

Meanwhile, the police had stated that the information that Senator Natasha gave Ms. Duru regarding organ harvesting was “false and without any iota of truth whatsoever,”

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation filed criminal defamation charges against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on March 29, 2025, according to the police, based on Ms. Duru’s petition and the findings of the investigation.

The three-count charge were filed under Sections 391 and 392 of the Penal Code applicable in the FCT.

Why the senator wasn’t prosecuted

The report states that Mr. Akpabio’s decision to end the prosecution prevented the case from being completed, and the Attorney-General then filed a request to have the charges withdrawn in accordance with his constitutional authority.

In reporting the claim and helping investigators, Ms. Duru demonstrated what the police called “patriotism and courage.” They noted that her activities helped to resolve the public dispute surrounding the case over a period of several months.

At the time of filing this report, Senator  Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan could not be reached for her comment as calls to her known telephone line did not go through.
