Peter Obi Joins Occupy National Assembly Protest Currently Ongoing
A prominent figure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, on Monday joined the ongoing Occupy National Assembly protest in Abuja over the Senate’s rejection of mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
Naijaeyes Blog reports that protesters stormed the National Assembly complex early in the morning to register their displeasure with the lawmakers’ decision.

Speaking at the protest ground, Obi faulted the Senate’s position on the electronic transmission of election results and urged lawmakers to allow the electoral process to proceed without restrictions.
Obi said, “Allow the election to go through the normal process. Whatever the outcome is, we will accept it. Why introduce confusion after the process?”
The Occupy National Assembly protest attracted Nigerian youths and pro-democracy activists who converged at the entrance of the National Assembly to express opposition to the Senate’s action. Many of the demonstrators carried placards while chanting solidarity songs in support of transparent elections.

Naijaeyes Blog gathered that the Occupy National Assembly protest also witnessed heavy security deployment, with personnel drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) positioned around the complex. The security operatives were on the ground to maintain order and monitor activities as the protest continued.
The protesters are demanding that the National Assembly reconsider its stance on the electronic transmission clause of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

They insist that electronic transmission of election results is vital to transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

As of the time of filing this report, the Occupy National Assembly protest remained peaceful, with security agencies closely observing the situation. Protesters maintained that they would continue to press their demands until lawmakers listen to the voices of Nigerians.
