A leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo South, Chief Suffy Uguoji, has asserted that no political coalition or alliance formed can oppose President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
He stated that the Southwest region remains firmly united behind the president’s second-term ambitions, maintaining that Nigerians—particularly those in the Southwest—will resist any attempt to undermine Tinubu’s constitutional right to seek two terms in office.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general election, Uguoji expressed confidence in the administration’s standing, emphasizing that political opposition movements attempting to align against the incumbent president will fail to gain traction.
He added that with President Tinubu currently serving his first term, he retains the constitutional right to seek re-election, warning that opposition movements should not be driven merely by a desire to seize power.
Drawing a parallel with the previous administration, Uguoji pointed out that former President Muhammadu Buhari, a native of the Northwest, completed two full terms in office despite facing significant criticism.
He noted that no major coalition led by Southern politicians emerged to cut Buhari’s eight-year tenure short, highlighting that Tinubu was among those who actively supported Buhari throughout his presidency.
“If a northerner from the Northwest was allowed by Nigerians to go for a second term and complete it without considering his achievements after the first tenure, it is therefore expedient for anybody succeeding him from another region to also be entitled to the two terms that he served, to allow fairness and equity to reign,” he said. The claim comes as the 2027 presidential contest increasingly takes shape, with President Bola Tinubu’s camp facing growing attempts by opposition figures to build a coalition capable of challenging the ruling APC.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has emerged as one of the main platforms around which opposition politicians are seeking to unite, with the party saying a broad and united opposition is necessary to defeat Tinubu in 2027.
At the same time, the opposition has struggled to maintain a single front, with disagreements over leadership, alliances and the choice of a presidential candidate creating uncertainty about how the coalition will eventually approach the election.
The fragmentation has provided an opening for Tinubu’s supporters to argue that competing opposition interests will split the anti-APC vote.
