FCT Area Council Election: Low Voter Turnout Recorded In Gwarimpa Polling Units
The FCT area council election in Gwarinpa has seen a low voter turnout, which has become a major talking point after only 18 voters out of 1,464 registered voters have cast their ballots as of 11:15 am at Galadima Gwarimpa, Abuja Model City, Polling Units 001 and 009.
Presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the development. The FCT area council election’s low voter turnout was evident as both polling centers recorded minimal activity hours after voting commenced.
Polling Unit 001 has 750 registered voters, while Polling Unit 009 has 714 registered voters. However, correspondents on the ground observed noticeably poor participation, reinforcing concerns about the FCT Area Council election’s low voter turnout in the area.
Speaking after casting his vote, an Abuja resident, Benson Idoko, attributed the situation to possible voter disillusionment.
“I don’t know whether it is due to lack of faith in the leadership. Ordinarily, there should be a huge turnout because it is a local election,” he said.
Voting reportedly commenced around 9:00 am, with security personnel deployed to maintain order and prevent any breakdown of law and order. Despite the security presence, the FCT Area Council Election has seen a low voter turnout persist in the Gwarimpa polling units.
Earlier reports also indicated voter apathy in polling units in Dawaki, where some residents expressed dissatisfaction with local government leadership. In contrast, polling units in Garki recorded a relatively significant turnout compared to the situation in Gwarimpa.
As the election progresses, observers are closely monitoring whether the FCT area council election’s low voter turnout trend will improve later in the day.
