Violence, panic and chaos rocked parts of Oyo State on Saturday amid local government congresses held by the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), faction loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.
According to our sources, the state is divided between two PDP groups. One group is devoted to Wike, while the other is loyal to Seyi Makinde, the state governor.
On Saturday, the Wike-led group held congresses for local government.
However, the congresses descended into violence, with multiple people being attacked. There have been about 25 recorded injuries.
Properties, including houses and vehicles, have been destroyed in some local government areas.
Attacks have been recorded in a number of local government areas, including Ibadan North, Ido, Ibarapa Central, Akinyele, and Ogbomoso North.
It was gathered that there has been an attack on the home of former state governor Barrister Hazim Gbolarumi, which is situated in Bodija in the Ibadan North local government area.
It was also discovered that the building had destroyed properties valued at millions of naira.
“There may be a need to upgrade the damages. More than 25 vehicles have been reported damaged. They are moving round the local governments, attacking individuals at home. Buildings were damaged,” he said.
Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, the chairman of the Wike-led PDP group in Oyo, confirmed the attacks to sources on Saturday afternoon.
Akinoso observed that thugs are circulating to terrorise the residents.
“We received a report of the attack on the residence of a former governor of the state. CP has ordered for the arrest of the hoodlums. We are on top of the matter,” the police spokesman said.
