Sources have predicted that baring any last minute change, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and his Oyo State counterpart Seyi Makinde will quit their membership of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), before April of 2026.
Due to the long-running leadership dispute plaguing the opposition platform, the PDP has experienced a turbulent time as its top leaders continue to leave.
According to information revealed by a credible source, while Bala Mohammed is headed to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Makinde has finalised preparations to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a reliable source with knowledge of party affairs told DAILY POST over the weekend.

The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that “all the PDP leaders are leaving. Bala Mohammed is already in APC, Makinde is on his way to ADC”.
How governors resigned from PDP
Nine PDP governors have quit the party since the general elections of 2023, alleging an intractable rift within the opposition.
In April 2025, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was the first to leave the party in favour of the APC.
In June 2025, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom joined the ruling party, and in October 2025, Peter Mbah of Enugu State also defected to the APC.

Douye Diri, the governor of Bayelsa State, joined the APC in November 2025, while Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, did the same in December 2025.
Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State all abandoned the PDP in favour of the ruling party in January of this year, bringing the total number of APC governors to 31.
Only Ademola Adeleke of Osun State defected to the Accord Party in December 2025. Meanwhile, Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal has indicated interest to dump PDP for APC.

According to information obtained by DAILY POST, Governor Dauda would be formally welcomed into the party right after the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festival.
The wave of PDP defections to the ruling APC includes both state and federal legislators.
According to a tracking by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre up to January 2026, 66 PDP federal lawmakers have defected to APC since the 10th National Assembly began in June 2023.
At least 19 senators and 47 House of Representatives members dumped PDP for APC
Defectors move to beat INEC deadline
Following the revelation of the new election schedule by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, politicians who intend to switch parties are under pressure to finalise their plans before April.

The gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections are set for February 6, 2027, while the presidential and National Assembly elections are set for January 16, 2027, according to the new schedule.
On the other hand, the party primary elections will take place from April 23, 2026, until May 30, 2026, including the resolution of any issues that may arise.
PDP may boycott 2027 presidential election
There has also been fresh indication that PDP may not participate in the 2027 presidential election owing to the unending leadership tussle.
Omenka Thomas, a party leader, said in Abuja over the weekend that the legal dispute over the legitimacy of the Ibadan convention would not be settled before to the presidential primary poll.
According to him, “Primary election is already at the corner and we don’t even know what the appeal court will decide on the matter yet.
“Now, any of the factions that elects a candidate during the primary, you don’t know what the court ruling will be; so nobody wants to waste his time and resources.

“We thought that by now, the Appeal Court must have ruled on the matter then before June to July, the Supreme Court will also give a final verdict but here we are still on appeal.
“APC knows what they are doing. They brought down the date for primary elections knowing the case PDP has in court.
“The FCT Minister does not want the party to have a candidate in 2027 and the whole things are playing out the way he wants”, he said.
