The national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), which is set for today (Sunday) in Abuja, has caused division among the party’s state chairmen.

The group supporting Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike is organising the convention.

Tony Aziegbemi, the chairman of the PDP in Edo State and also the chairman of the Forum of PDP State Chairmen, told Sunday PUNCH that the convention shouldn’t take place because of the ongoing Supreme Court lawsuit.

He cautioned that moving forward with the convention would be a betrayal of the rule of law.

“The convention being planned by the Wike faction is illegal, as there is a case at the Supreme Court which is yet to be decided.

“I will urge the state chairmen and their members not to attend the convention because it is illegal. INEC should also monitor those being paraded as delegates. They are impostors, and the list being used might not tally with the one with INEC,” he said.

Similarly, the Sokoto State chapter of the party announced it would boycott the convention.

Hassan Sanyinawal, the state’s publicity secretary, declared that the chapter would not take sides in the leadership conflict.

The PDP state Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sanyinawal, said the chapter would remain neutral in the leadership dispute.

Alhaji Isa Bawa, the state chairman, stated that the resolution was the result of lengthy discussions over the leadership issue that the party is currently facing nationally.

He clarified that the purpose of the gathering was to decide if Kwara delegates should attend the convention, particularly in light of the state’s involvement in the previous convention that took place in Ibadan in November 2025.

“The stakeholders agreed that we should send our delegates to fully participate in the forthcoming national convention in Abuja on March 29,” Bawa said, noting that the outcome of the convention would guide the party’s next line of action.

The convention is scheduled to take place at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Wike emphasised that internal conflicts were common in a major political party while confirming preparations and stating that efforts at reconciliation would continue following the convention.

He denied the appeal that the Kabiru Turaki-aligned faction had filed with the Supreme Court, stating that it would not have an impact on the upcoming convention.

In advance of the federal elections in 2027, he also voiced optimism about the party’s prospects, predicting that Nigerians would be taken aback by the PDP.

However, the crisis within the party deepened as governors and other key stakeholders aligned with the Turaki-led bloc distanced themselves from the convention.
