Top leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have arrived in Kano to receive Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of his official defection to the party.

It had earlier been reported that Kwankwaso, a former governor and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), resigned from the party with immediate effect.
In a statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso explained that his decision was driven by the need for strategic political realignment amid the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape.
Among those already in Kano are the National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
Also present in the state is former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
Kwankwaso is expected to officially receive his ADC membership card later on Monday.

Amaechi was welcomed in Kano by the former Deputy Governor of the state, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Other notable political figures, including Senator Marafa, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, and several northern leaders, are currently in Kano to show support ahead of the anticipated declaration.
Meanwhile, Kano Central Senator Rufai Sani Hanga of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former APC governorship candidate in Kano, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, are reportedly holding strategic meetings to finalize arrangements for Kwankwaso’s formal entry into the ADC.
As of the time of this report, thousands of supporters have gathered at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, waving ADC flags and chanting solidarity songs as they await the official announcement of his defection.
